Department of Science and Technology (DST) was set up in May 1971, with the target of advancing new zones of Science and Technology and to assume the part of a nodal division for arranging, organizing and advancing S&T exercises in the nation. Mandate

DST has the accompanying as the order and significant duties

All issues concerning: I) Science and Engineering Research Council/Board (SERC/SERB);ii) Technology Development Board (TDB) and related Acts, for example, the R&D Cess Act,1986 and the TDB Act,1995;iii) National Council for Science and Technology Communication;iv) National S&T Entrepreneurship Development Board;v) International S&T Cooperation including arrangement of logical appends abroad.;vi) Autonomous S&T Institutions identifying with the subject under DST including Institute of Astro-material science and Institute of Geo-magnetism;vii) Professional Science Academies advanced and financed by DST;viii) The Survey of India and National Atlas and Thematic Mapping Organisation;ix) National Spatial Data Infrastructure and advancement of G.I.S;x) The National Innovation Foundation, Ahmedabad.

Matters ordinarily influencing Scientific and mechanical divisions/associations/organizations e.g. budgetary, work force, buy and import approaches and rehearses.

Administration Information Systems for S&T and coordination thereof. Matters in regards to Inter-Agency/Inter-Departmental coordination for developing S&T missions.

Matters concerning local innovation especially the advancement of endeavors including the commercialization of such innovation other than those under the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.

Every single other measure required for the advancement of S&T and their application to the improvement and security of the country.

Matters identifying with institutional S&T limit developing including setting of new establishments and institutional framework.

Advancement of S&T at the State, District, and Village levels for grass-roots improvement through State S&T Councils and different systems.

Use of S&T for weaker areas, ladies and other hindered segments of Society.
