The Civil Services Examination (CSE) is a Nationwide Competitive Examination in India Conducted by the Union Public Service Commission for recruitment to various Civil Services of the Government of India, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS) Indian Revenue Service (IRS) The Examination Consists of the following Three stages: Stage I: Preliminary examination - A qualifying test advertisied in May and held in August each year.Results are published in mid-October. Stage II: Main examination - Held in December every year. Results are usually published in the second week of March. Stage III: Personality Test (interview) - held in April/May each year Final results are usually announced in May Age Limit : A candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 32 years on August 1 of the year of examination. Education All candidates must have as a minimum one of the following educational qualifications: A degree from a Central, State or Deemed university A degree received through correspondence or distance education A degree from an open university Numbers of Attempts General category candidates: 6 OBC category candidates = 9 SC/ST Candidates = 16 Examination Pattern Preliminary Examination There are two compulsory papers of 200 marks each in the Civil Services Prelims Exam. Important Points: (i) Both the question papers are of the objective type (multiple choice questions) of two hours each. (ii) The question papers will be set both in Hindi and English. However, questions relating to English Language Comprehension skills would be provided only in English. (iii) Blind candidates would be allowed an extra 20 minutes of time at each paper. Main Examination The written examination will consist of the following papers: Paper-I Section 1 Essay 200 Marks Section 2 English Comprehension & English Précis 100 Marks (The level of paper would be Matriculation/ Xth standard level) Paper-II General Studies–I 250Marks (Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society) Paper-III General Studies –II 250 Marks (Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International relations) Paper-IV General Studies –III 250 Marks (Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management) Paper-V General Studies –IV 250 Marks (Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude) Paper-VI Optional Subject – Paper 1 250 Marks Paper-VII Optional Subject – Paper 2 250 Marks Total marks from written test 1800 Marks Personality Test (Interview) 275 Marks Grand Total 2075 Marks |
