Re: Will I be able to get admission in Genetic Engineering after 12th without having Math

A qualified Genetic engineer, must have a graduate / postgraduate degree in genetics or related fields such as biotechnology, molecular biology, microbiology or biochemistry OR a doctorate (PhD) from a recognised university, based on 2-3 years of his own research under the guidance of a professor/lecturer.

The basic eligibility criteria for a graduate degree (BE / B.Tech) is 10+2 or equivalent examination, with Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics

Most institutes do not offer courses in Genetic Engineering as a special discipline but as a subsidiary in biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry streams. Undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Biotechnology offer specialisation in genetic engineering.

Selection to the graduate courses ( BE / B.Tech ) is based on merit i.e the marks scores in the of 10+2 exam and through entrance test. Entrance to the IIT's is through JEE (Joint Entrance Exam) and for other institutions through their own separate entrance examinations and other state level and national level exams. Apart from the IIT's, some other renowned institutes also recognize JEE scores for selection.

So basically you cannot pursue Genetic Enineering as you did not take up Mathematics as a subject in 12th standard.

However you can pursue Biotechnology which also offers a very good career scope and the subjects which are covered under biotechnology are:

1. Microbiology
2. Agricultural Biotechnology
3. Genetic Engineering
4. Clinical Research
5. Biochemical Engineering
6. Immunology (Biotechnology in fighting/diagnosing disease)
7. Food Biotechnology
8. Veterinary Sciences
9. Biomedical Engineering (artificial organs/synthetic organs/bio-instruments)
10. Bioinformatics (Computational Biology)
11. Marine Biology (Life in oceans)
12. Extra-terrestrial Biology (Life in space)
13. Environmental Biotechnology
14. Nano-Biotechnology (an emerging field with applications in Health Research and Diagnostics)

Some of the colleges you can choose to pursue after appearing for the entrance examination are:

AIIMS Biotechnology Entrance Exam
JEE (For colleges across the country): and for all IITs
Combined Biotechnology Entrance Examination (CBEEE)
Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University Common Entrance Test
University Of Rajasthan , Jaipur: PET and JEE
Punjab University, Chandigarh : JEE
GNDU, Amritsar : JEE and own entrance test
University of Kerala
Bharathiar University
Jamia Milia Islamia
Bhartiya Vidyapeeth Pune
Bansthali
Visverswaraih Technological University, Karnataka
Various colleges of Delhi University
Thapar University
IIIT Hyderabad (JEE, Own test)
