The Indian Institute of Technology (generally Referred as IIT Roorkee or IITR) is a self-ruling Educational Institution situated in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, India. The Institute was begun by, Sir James Thomason in 1989 as Thomason College of Civil Engineering, later it was changed over to Indian Institute Of Technology by the Ministry of HRD Government of India.
